What are the most popular social networking site that you commonly hear of recently?
Why are people motivated to check into Foursquare?
Badges are the reason! Foursquare have many different badges to unlock! Perhaps this is one of the many reasons why people would be motivated to get out of home and meet friends to try to go new places and earn more badges.
Examples of some badges I have earned so far:
Honestly after using it for more than a month, It has become a habit for me to check-in to where I am and see where my friends are at.
Oh yes, and as mentioned before! Being mayor of a place gives you BENEFITS! So it makes people aim for that.
Wanna see what cool virtual badges you can earn from Foursquare? Go HERE!
What can you do with the locations you check-in to?
On Foursquare, when you check into a location, you can add tips for the location or add to-dos to remind yourself of places you want to or intend to go.
Okay so not all social networking sites are perfect isn’t it? Foursquare would have its fair share of nay-sayers too! And apparently, Foursquare is getting so popular lately that it is making the headlines a few times already.
Some News article related to Foursquare I found online are
1) China blocks Foursquare after check in to Tiananman Sqaure.
2) Singapore deal for Foursquare
Some Reasons why people are against the usage of Foursquare?
I have thought of a few reasons and asked around regarding why people are against the idea of using Foursquare.
Some would say that it would intrude your privacy by updating your locations – but let me explain this, its self-check ins and you can choose to hide the check-ins for your own viewing only. This gives it more privacy, as you might not want your friends to know where you are when you’re dating at certain places but just want to check in so you can see the “history” and still reminesice on the places you have been to in the past.
Some say that why would you want to tell people where you are? – And you know what you would eventually have days when you’re seating at canteen all alone and one of your friends just rings you up cause they saw your Foursquare check-in were somewhere near them, and tah-dah! Now you have company!
How awesome is Foursquare?! After reading this don’t you have the urge to just download the Foursquare application and start checking in to places now?
Hope you will benefit from Foursquare!

ReplyDeleteHow big is the 4SQ group here in S'pore? How can others leverage on it for business, education, etc?
i only used twitter and facebook.
ReplyDeleteIt work with twitter?
first time hearing of 4SQ; its a nice concept.
ReplyDeleteIt mixes with the physical world more directly then Facebook or Twitter does. Not my type of thing though XD
this actually sound tempting. hahaha, and this is my first time hearing about this application. so this is actually free at sign up but we get benefits if we frequent this site?
ReplyDeleteHey Phoebe!
ReplyDeleteWow! I didn’t know about Foursquare until I read your blog!
I am in favour of Foursquare as long as we can control the privacy settings.
Yes the addiction to it can be controlled.
It’s definitely useful for parents if they want to track where their children are hanging out so they feel a sense of security.
At the same time, it benefits the children so that parents do not have to keep messaging or calling to know where we are.

ReplyDelete1)Serena - I'm not too sure about the exact population of foursquare users in Singapore but i do know it is growing bigger by day! However i found on a site that mention its international population is growing by 15,000 users day in total! so thats alot! As mentioned above many business have used foursquare to reward it's consumer. For education, perhaps when people check into places, the tips they add about the place would be educational to people!
2)Ah Q - yeap! you can connect your Foursquare acc with your Twitter and Facebook accounts!
3)Carl - but no harm trying an account for fun! its worth the try! for boys you might be able to get discounts of topman if its your first check in there!
4)OM-NOM-NOM - yeap free sign up for this application with no obligations! yeap! benefits are definitely there, but you'll have to hard hard getting places to earn badges for them.
5) hirahk951 - privacy settings are available just like facebook, so you can choose to show your check-ins to your friends or you only. Public with/without and account would not be able to view your check-ins! so no worries about unnecessary stalkers. And i agree on the parent - children thing but thats for parents who knows how to use foursqaure and if they're children would want to accept them or not! HAHA!
Thanks for the reference. We work very hard to keep the list as up to date as possible.

This is the first time i have ever heard of foursquare. A new and fresh social networking platform. I might want to try it. Is it like a location tracker kind of application?
ReplyDeletefoursquare is interesting. I like the way it makes use of the high interconnectivity of social sites to share personal useful tips to anyone, which is especially helpful to someone new to the place.

I have not heard about it before and it really looks like a good website!
ReplyDeleteHmm interesting..never heard of this networking tool before. It seems like this application is targeted more for the outgoing and sociable kind, definitely not a neccessity for me as I don't go out often haha.
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, I can see the hip factor in this application, its rather unique in its own sense and who knows, it may soon take the world by storm just like Facebook & Twitter did.
It seems to be quite an simple social networking site, but I guess being too complicated isn't too good too! Maybe it would be the next coming hot social networking site!
ReplyDeleteIt an interesting application for mobile to have it but is only applicable for some phones. This application may help in when going to make a decision for an outing, remind for places and could provide with location which is useful. I am grateful to you that starting now, I get to know this application.
ReplyDelete6)Chaunce - Thanks! your site was great help to my assignment!
ReplyDelete7)Zulfadli - Yea its like a location tracker, Though it is able to read the location you're at, you have to "check-in" to give a specific location name and this allows you to gain points.
Cool, this is a good attempt to promote the shop as well too.
ReplyDeletefirst time I heard about four-square.. The reward system in the form of badges would give the users initiative to stay connected. A definite PLUS!!
ReplyDeleteHowever I find it rather simple!! More interesting features can be added to make this a success!
Hi Phoebe, i have foursquare but i dont find it useful, what do you have to say about that?
